iOS is probably faster and takes less power because Android uses Java to do most things which means that it has to run a Java VM which consumes a lot of resources.
The really important thing is that Android is getting more popular than iOS. I don't know the current stats but if there aren't already more apps for Android than for iOS then it's probably just a matter of time.
Also Apple is a very ugly company with really bad ways to handle things and ridiculously overpriced products (which clearly is an important aspect when judging iOS because it only runs on Apple devices... - which is another big minus).
So Android clearly wins in my opinion.
Thins is, iOS is MUCH simplier than Android, but it gives ALOT less freedom than Android.
Tried both, Live with Walkman & iPhone 3G, damn that iTunes
You cant just drop files to your phone without it if you have iDevice, in Android you can simply instert a SD-card to PC or attach via cable, or via wi-fi, or...or.... Yes, so much freedom even here.
Also as DC mentioned, iOS quite more stable, because its just ONE hardware parts per phone. So its easier to optimize and stuff, while Android can have tons of different hardware stuff underneath it. One thing i dont like in my android phone - battery gets dead at evening.
Vote goes for Android. And dunno about your countries guys, but in Russia iCrap is REALLY overpriced, SGSIII cheaper than iPhone 5 lol.

Android is better. I cannot see any real reason to pick iOS over Android unless you are into all those fancy app icons or stuff.
+ There is a lot of launchers for Android which makes it look like iOS
It really gives you a lot of possibilities with a much faster speed than Android. Owned both, now on iPhone, don't want to use anything else.

iOS. Definitely. If you want more freedom - jailbreak it.
My groupmate accidentally reseted it settings to default and iPhone was in "iBrick" state, just stops on loading with apple logo. It took me about 5-6 hourd in total to fix it. Wonder why there is no block for that button, because if you accidentaly click 2 times...*poof* iBrick

It took me ~20 minutes to restore it and re-jailbreak it. Please tell me you were just kidding.

No kidding at all. Surfed whole net for instructions and algorithms and shit, tried almost all of them, 3 redsn0w versions, sn0wbreeze, quickpwn and iREB. iREB was the last and it actually helped. It was the only one who forced iPhone 3G to the DFU mode which actually worked and let iTunes restore it. That was my first experience with iPhone, and i didnt really liked it.
And according to stuff i found while surfed, some iDeviced after "infinity apple" can be fixed only in service centers or whatever they called.
JVM does give some overhead, but the main problem was that the simulators for android are super slow if u don't have a intel processor.
Now for the users, i'd recommend an iphone for my father ( who's absolutely not into computers ) and an android for my imaginary younger brother, who's eager to learn new stuff.
Or: android, steeper learning curve but more options.

And that's as free as it gets. If you want to develop apps for it, pay Apple for a Mac and a developer license so you can only use objective-c
If you want to develop apps for Android, use Java (not even Go? seriously, Google?)
I think they are actually bad OSes, hiding a ton of stuff from the end user without clear methods to access stuff on your own device (jailbreak/root) doesn't help.
I choose Android over iOS just because of the wider range of hardware supported, I believe the other differences between them are trivial.
