@user Yates: DC said earlier that he didn't want the game to lag for players simply because someone wants to spectate. Streaming video would probably be even worse than straight transferring the map.

Just some additions and elaborations on my previous post...

Quote (highscores) >

I forgot about cheating and stuff. Maybe check if the player's mission files are exactly the same as others?
This kinda sounds too much, but highscores would be a very nice feature.

Quote (saves) >

Just like the "progress" and "score" files, editing the save file shouldn't be possible in order to avoid cheating.

Quote (mouse) >

In addition to the mouse hold, release, and clicky stuff, we should be able to check exactly where the pointer is on the map. Something like getpointerx() and getpointery() which will return the X and Y coordinates of the pointer.
The pointer also disappears after a while, we should be able to stop that. Maybe even the ability to replace the default bloody hand pointer via lua commands?

There should be an option to choose the server timeout. And also, one for forcing no frame skipping.
I'm up for the player's head skin thing too

The server information is kinda incomplete. It lacks other infos like if the specific server uses weapon mods or not and the latency (which it's pretty much important).

The head skins thing user Yates suggested is neat. It could work if the head sprite is separated from the body and there's a folder where we can save our custom heads in. Just like sprays in CS2D.
It's just a maximum of 1-6 custom heads per team, anyway.

Probably not the right thread for this, but CC no longer connects to the USGN - I’m guessing because if the SSL certificates?
This also affects logging in and, more importantly, the serverlist.

@user Hador: Ooops. No, USGN uses plain UDP only. No SSL/HTTPS/certificates involved. This is related to the server move and the new IP.

Therefore you have to change the IP address in sys/usgn.dat (first line) from
85.214.102.60

to
81.169.236.243

The handful of people still enjoying this game would love to see a quality of life update at some point, featuring:

• unlocked framerates (biggest improvement that might be the most feasible probably maybe)
• more fullscreen options, including borderless windowed mode and making standard fullscreen mode properly lock the cursor in the window
• UI scaling options, with automatic scaling as the default, but with the option to change the scale manually
• pixel scaling options, allowing you to zoom in and out (though that might look ugly if any filtering gets applied if the zoom is done smoothly)
• make the Fart be able to push mines and traps (very important indeed)
• full keybinding options and maybe other control settings (for example the ability to lock the camera with a key, so you can move and have the camera still locked in place for cheeky plays like running into some mines and then using Swap on an enemy player that would normally be just out of screen range)

I am aware of how difficult these things would be considering the janky old Blitz3D engine, and how pointless it seems with the low player count, but honestly Carnage Contest is unironically one of, if not the best game in its genre, and I think with just a few modern touches it could be elevated into a game that can be made future proof and enjoyed forever, even if it's only by like 5 people. I'd donate for such an update. It honestly doesn't even require fancy new graphics or anything, except for maybe higher res UI elements so the scaling wouldn't look ugly if implemented.

And if it would just be easier to remake the game in Unity, I would donate for such a cause as well. Even if Stranded III made DC rich

I would like to second Seekay's proposal, as another longterm fan of Carnage Contest. It is indeed something special, and goes in a direction of its own that worms, being a mainstream company with a young audience would not.

Would be tragic to see CC become less and less compatible with modern systems.

It's 2022 and I won't invest time into a code base which is written in BlitzMax because it's too painful to maintain. Also BlitzMax is basically dead and not updated anymore which isn't a good thing either.

It's tempting to rewrite CC in C# (I would probably pick Mono or Godot as engine and not Unity) but I guess it's not very likely that I'll have the time and passion to do so and to actually finish it

I figured as much. C# would be neat, Lua is weirding me out with its lack of squiggly brackets and slightly different looking operators.

Iirc user SQ was gonna attempt his own take on a CC remake but it never got far. A shame really cause I was kinda hyped for it.

It's just a bit sad knowing there's people still playing old janky Worms Armageddon instead of the obviously superior Carnage Contest.
People will see the light one day

@user Seekay: Oh hell yeah! CC is way better than Armageddon!
but I do feel like CC is missing a lot of quality of life features, along with server stability and whatnot.

I remembered another fella from the USDE Discord server was gonna try remake CC, can't remember the name, but that was looking solid, shame really.
